Training Guide

From Nostalther Violet Wiki

Introduction

A knight's melee skills increases faster than any other vocation. The same goes for paladins' distance skills, and for druids and sorcerer's magic level. The shielding skills of both Knights and Paladins increase at the same speed, and fishing advances at the same rate for all vocations.
Players who have no vocation advance each skill, apart from fishing, at the slowest rate out of all vocations.

Melee training

The vocations advance melee skill at varying rates, but the training methods are the same. For example, a sorcerer can advance melee by training on a monk, similar to how a knight would.
When training, it's necessary to deal damage to continue advancing your skills. A characters "try" count resets to 30 each time they cause damage to their target using auto attacks (Attacking with spells or runes does not reset the skill try count). A skill "try" is used each time a player attacks and each time they are attacked while holding a shield. A player does not need to take damage to advance in shielding, only deal damage every 30 tries or less.

If you are attacking only and/or not wearing a shield, you need to deal damage every 60 seconds.
If you are attacking and being attacked by 1 creature, you need to deal damage every 30 seconds
If you are attacking and being attacked by 2 creatures, you need to deal damage every 20 seconds

Distance skill works differently. See further details below.
In conclusion, understanding the details of training in the game can help you develop your skills more effectively. Bleeding the target at least every 20 seconds is an essential rule for advancing skills efficiently.
Common training methods are monks by summon, a ghoul by summon or convincing, wild slimes by killing its summons and wild gargoyles because of their healing ability.

Monk Training

  • Have a mage summon monk for you, can not be convinced.
  • Have 2 monsters hitting the monk before you attack it to break it's shielding and use a weak weapon to get consistent blood hits
  • Have 2, preferably, weak monsters hitting you so you gain shielding.

Ghoul Training

  • Either convince a ghoul (Level 91 for knights, 35 for paladins) or have a friend summon one for you.
  • Hit the ghoul with a relatively weak weapon.
  • You need 2 monsters hitting you for your shielding, the weaker the better.

Slime Training

Training on slimes is slower than using a monk because when a slime dies it takes a few seconds for the new one to get to you. You will probably need to use a very weak weapon and if your skills are high even using weak weapons you will kill the slimes fast.

  • Get 1 wild slime and find a place where you can block yourself in with only 2 monsters attacking you.
  • Hit the original slime so you can tell it's not a summon, don't kill it.
  • Now just hit the summoned slimes for your training, the wild slime will summon you an infinite amount.

Gargoyle Training

Can be a bit tricky as they usually spawn around other more dangerous monsters.

  • Find gargoyles, which can be found around Ankrahmun, Tombs for example
  • Preferably stand where only 2 monsters can hit you, so no other monster joins the party and breaks your shield
  • Find the right weapon balance, which will change as skills grow
  • Switch between gargoyles if they get low health and let them heal, they will run at low hp

Distance training

Training your distance skills in the game is different from training your melee skills. With melee training, 1 skill try is added and used each time you attack and are attacked. With distance training, each successful hit counts as 2 tries(blood or spark), missed attacks count as 1 skill try, but only blood hits will reset your skill try counter back to 30. It's important to aim for as many blood hits as possible, but try to make each hit deal as little damage as possible to minimize the need for healing. Additionally, to increase your shielding, you should have two weak monsters hitting you while using a shield. Remember, paladins gain shielding as fast as knights, might as well make us of it.

For low-skill players, training with spears on a monk is an option, but you will quickly find that you kill the monk and need two monks or a new target entirely. Sometimes it's better to train with another player. You can look for another paladin who wants to train or ask a knight friend to let you hit them while they're training but they better have good gear. Spears are the easiest and cheapest option for training, as they don't break. At some point, the easiest method of training might just be to hunt, since making hits are the fastest way to advance in distance anyway.

Another option is to collect or buy small stones and go to the dark cathedral to convince a dark monk, which can be convinced, unlike regular monks. Small stones deal lower damage that you should be able to train on a dark monk without killing it. This option is ideal because you can train alone without being dependent on anyone else. Acquiring lots of small stones is difficult though and they break when thrown. Important to note that small stones also have 20 attack in 7.4. Small stones attack was changed to 5 after 7.5. Due to their higher attack and 100% break chance in 7.4, they don't really compete as an alternative to spears.
